Start a New Series

Resolving to get the family to read more is on our list of New Year's Resolutions every year. There is no such thing as too many books after all!

The perfect way to do that is to get into a new series. We absolutely love series here at Toppsta. Whether you are looking for something new for an insatiable bookworm or hoping to encourage a more reluctant reader to broaden their horizons, there is nothing better for young readers than realising that the amazing new book they just read is the start of a new series that they can devour.

There are plenty of brilliant book series for kids of all ages and we're delighted to share some of our favourites here. Whether you love action, adventure, mystery, funny books or books about animals there is something for you on the list.

Try something new this January and watch out for more series recommendations this year.

Start a New Series

Big Bright Feelings Series - Picture book

If there's one picture book series we will always recommend about feelings for toddlers, with great tools to handle difficult emotions, it's the Big Bright Feelings series by Tom Percival. Each picture book, packed full of sweet illustrations throughout, tackles the big emotions children face. The themes of the books vary from self-acceptance and anxiety, to resilience, lies and making new friends. There are eight books in the series with new book, Sammy Feels Shy, coming out in July this year.

Frank and Bert Series - Picture Book

If you're looking for a positive picture book series about friendship and play, we know Frank and Bert, written and illustrated by the bestselling talent that is Chris Naylor-Ballesteros, will bring joy to your and your little ones' bedtime reading. Frank and Bert are a fox and a bear, and they are the best of friends. In each book, they face a new challenge that might feel a little daunting at first, but only makes their friendship stronger. From learning new things like riding a bike to understanding that it's important that everyone playing has fun, the two pals are always getting up to fun activities! There are four books in the series including a new title, out this month.

Billy and the Mini Monsters Series - 5+

Billy and the Mini Monsters is a brilliant laugh-out-loud adventure series. The funny stories, colourful illustrations and simple text make it a perfect read for newly independent and reluctant readers. Billy and the monsters’ adventures together are action-packed and hilarious, as Billy tries to cover up for his hairy, smelly, not-so-scary friends. The books see Billy and the Mini Monsters through first experiences, such as school trips, parties and moving house, as well as common fears or anxieties, like bullying and being scared of the dark. Written by Zanna Davidson and illustrated by Melanie Williamson, we really recommend these stories as a first introduction to chapter books, with their colourful illustrations and approachable, funny stories. There are 15 books in the series and another two books coming this year.

Little Gems Series - 5+

The Little Gems series from publisher Barrington Stoke is the perfect collection of first chapter books to grow children from ages 5 to 8 into readers! Written and illustrated by some of the best talent in the UK, the Little Gems books are short chapter books specifically designed to not overwhelm beginner readers and to help them build vocabulary, reading speed and stamina to develop a love for reading that will last a lifetime. The books are illustrated in full colour for more vivid and engaging reading, carefully spaced for readers who might struggle with words on the page and are a small size to fit in little hands and to take everywhere. There are currently more than 75 titles in the series with more coming this year!

Alan, King of the Universe Series - 7+

Here at Toppsta we love graphic novels and we love a new series, so this bright and fun two-colour series about an hilarious cat and his side-kick Fido, from bestselling author Tom McLaughlin (author of The Accidental Prime Minister series) is a big thumbs-up from us. Out in February, make sure you add this to your wishlist!

Magicalia Series - 8+

Ideal for all readers aged 8+, this fantasy adventure series by Jennifer Bell is all about bravery, magic, friendship and a pinch of mystery. Get ready to be swept in a world of ancient meteorites and strange beasts called magicores! Throughout the books, readers will fall in love with the friendship between our protagonists Bitsy and Kosh, their dangerous mission across the UK, India and France, and all the incredible creatures Magicalia has to offer. Book one published last year and book two, Thief of Shadows comes out in Feb.

Historical Animal Stories Series - 9+

Winner of the British Book Award for Children's Fiction Book of the Year, Phil Earle's middle grade Historical Animal Stories series will tug at all your heartstrings. While the books' single stories are not interconnected and do not need to be read in any particular order, each book is set in one of the world wars, and in each book a young protagonist develops a unique bond with an animal. There are currently three books in the series with a new title, The Dawn of Adonis publishing in June.

The Powerless Trilogy Series - YA

This is the dagger-to-the-throat romantasy YA trilogy on everyone's lips. A TikTok phenomenon pulling elements of our favourite tropes, this is a mixture of Red Queen, The Hunger Games and Fourth Wing. The trope is rivals to enemies. Our main characters tell their stories through a dual POV. And may we also mention that the main male character is morally grey and very handsome? While this series is not spicy, it does have the 'Who did this to you?' trope, as well as heart-racing trials and an epic chase, all while our main characters, Ordinary-born Paedyn Gray and Ilya’s Enforcer Kai Azer, fight their strong feelings for each other. There are two books in the main series, a novella and a new book, Fearless, out in April
